FIG
Makes Historic Decisions (12th October, 2005)
Meeting
under the presidency of Professor Bruno Grandi (11th Oct)
in Baku, the FIG Executive Committee Members accepted with
a large majority the new Code of Points for both Men’s
and Women’s Artistic Gymnastics.
Updating
the Code was rendered necessary due to the incidents that
tainted the Men’s competitions at the Olympic Games
in Athens. The Code’s content is now available to the
Federations and their coaches, coming into force as of January
1, 2006. When questioned as to the FIG Executive Committee’s
decision, its President, Professor Bruno Grandi, expressed
his satisfaction with the outcome, pointing out that gymnastics
was in dire need of a modern tool that would allow gymnasts
to progress in a safe environment dominated by sport justice.
In
conjunction with the new Code, the FIG entrusted its partner
Longines with the development of a video system allowing judges
to view a litigious sequence in real time. The procedure will
be officially implemented for the first time in November at
the 38th Artistic Gymnastics World Championships.
